On the printed late-fall timetable, the Kennewick leaves Keystone Harbor ten times a day. The first departure is at 7:15 a.m. and the last is at 9:10 p.m. On paper it is the same schedule every day through the holidays, and WSDOT says outright that the route runs its regular schedule on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, and Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25.
WSDOT also publishes a second table, a list of planned cancellations, and it tells a different story about the evenings. Between Oct. 25 and Dec. 26, the Port Townsend–Coupeville route has evening sailings canceled on 28 dates. On all 28 dates the cuts fall only on evening sailings. The morning and midday boats are not touched. If you plan to come home from Port Townsend after dark this winter, plan around that second table.
A Season That Started With the Wrong Boat
The route moved to its seasonal one-boat schedule on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026. That same day showed how little slack a one-boat route has. The Whidbey News-Times reported that an engine-room staffing shortage across Washington State Ferries kept the Kennewick from serving the route as planned. The Salish filled in but did not sail until 12:30 p.m., partly because of fog. WSF waived no-show fees for travelers whose reservations were affected, and the route was back to normal service on Tuesday.
WSF expects the one-boat setup to last for months. Its 2026 Service Contingency Plan, dated April 2026, gives the Port Townsend–Coupeville route one vessel from late fall through winter into early spring, and two vessels from early spring through late fall. No exact date for the return of two-boat service in 2027 has been published. With one boat, a canceled sailing usually means waiting an hour and a half or more for the next departure.
Three Evening Departures, and Which Ones Go Missing
From Coupeville, the late-fall schedule has seven departures before 5 p.m.: 7:15, 8:45, 10:15 and 11:45 a.m., then 1:15, 2:45 and 4:15 p.m. After that come three evening departures at 6:00, 7:30 and 9:10 p.m. Port Townsend's matching evening departures are 5:15, 6:45 and 8:30 p.m.
The planned cancellations come in five clusters. Within each cluster, the cuts start early in the evening and move later from one night to the next:
| Dates | Coupeville departures canceled |
|---|---|
| Sun. Oct. 25 | 7:30 and 9:10 p.m. |
| Mon. Oct. 26 to Tue. Oct. 27 | 9:10 p.m. |
| Wed. Oct. 28 | None from Coupeville. Port Townsend's 8:30 p.m. is canceled and an 8:25 p.m. sailing is added |
| Fri. Nov. 6 to Sat. Nov. 7 | 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. |
| Sun. Nov. 8 | 7:30 p.m. |
| Mon. Nov. 9 | 7:30 and 9:10 p.m. |
| Tue. Nov. 10 | 9:10 p.m. |
| Sun. Nov. 22 | 6:00 p.m., plus an added 6:50 p.m. Port Townsend sailing |
| Mon. Nov. 23 | 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. |
| Tue. Nov. 24 | 7:30 p.m. |
| Wed. Nov. 25 | 7:30 and 9:10 p.m. |
| Thu. Nov. 26 to Fri. Nov. 27 | 9:10 p.m. |
| Fri. Dec. 4 to Sat. Dec. 5 | 6:00 p.m. |
| Sun. Dec. 6 to Mon. Dec. 7 | 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. |
| Tue. Dec. 8 | 7:30 p.m. |
| Wed. Dec. 9 | 9:10 p.m. |
| Sun. Dec. 20 to Mon. Dec. 21 | 6:00 p.m. |
| Tue. Dec. 22 | 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. |
| Wed. Dec. 23 | 7:30 p.m. |
| Thu. Dec. 24 | 7:30 and 9:10 p.m. |
| Fri. Dec. 25 to Sat. Dec. 26 | 9:10 p.m. |
Look at the Nov. 22 to Nov. 27 cluster. It opens by dropping the 6:00 p.m. boat. Two nights later only the 7:30 p.m. is gone. By Thanksgiving the 9:10 p.m. is the one missing. The December clusters move the same way. Across the full stretch, 37 Coupeville departures are scheduled to be canceled, and every one of them leaves after 5 p.m. On the worst nights, two of the three evening boats are off the schedule. Port Townsend's evening sailings are canceled on the same dates, with two exceptions where WSDOT adds a replacement. On Oct. 28 an 8:25 p.m. sailing from Port Townsend replaces the canceled 8:30. On Nov. 22 a 6:50 p.m. sailing is added after the 6:45 is canceled.
Why Keystone Answers to the Tide
WSDOT gives the reason on its tidal cancellations page. Tidal currents force scheduled cancellations or changes to sailing times on the Port Townsend–Coupeville route, and riders are sent to the route's own adjustments page for upcoming changes. The printed schedule says the same thing in shorter form: extreme tidal conditions may interrupt service.
A 2024 Whidbey News Group feature, published in Peninsula Daily News, explains what that looks like from the pilothouse. Before leaving Keystone Harbor, the Kennewick's captain checked the wind speed. The feature reported that in winds over 40 knots, the boat would need all of its horsepower to get out of the harbor. The captain and chief mate, standing at opposite ends of the vessel, worked together to position more than 2,700 tons of steel so the wind would not push it off course. The article called the run's tide rips, low tides, winds and currents part of "arguably the most difficult landing in the state ferry system," on a 35-minute crossing of about five miles.
The tide table already sets which evening boats are gone in late November and December, and WSDOT has posted them weeks in advance.
Where the Clusters Land on the Coupeville Calendar
Several of the clusters fall on the busiest dates of the local season:
- Thanksgiving week. On Wednesday, Nov. 25, the 7:30 and 9:10 p.m. Coupeville departures are both canceled. On Thanksgiving itself, the "regular schedule" note still has an exception: the 9:10 p.m. Coupeville and 8:30 p.m. Port Townsend sailings are canceled. The same two sailings are canceled again on Friday, Nov. 27.
- Parade night, Saturday, Dec. 5. The Coupeville Chamber lists the Christmas Parade, Tree Lighting and Caroling for 4 to 5 p.m. in Historic Downtown Coupeville. That evening, the 6:00 p.m. Coupeville departure and the 5:15 p.m. Port Townsend departure are both canceled. That leaves 7:30 p.m. as the first boat west after the parade.
- Sunday, Dec. 6. The Chamber lists A Coupeville Children's Christmas Corral from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rain Shadow Nursery, 107 South Main. The ferry runs normally during the event. After it, the 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. Coupeville departures are canceled, so the next boat out is the 9:10 p.m.
- Christmas Eve through Dec. 26. On Thursday, Dec. 24, the 7:30 and 9:10 p.m. Coupeville departures are canceled. On Christmas Day and the day after, the 9:10 p.m. Coupeville and 8:30 p.m. Port Townsend sailings are canceled.
Dec. 26 is also the last day of WSDOT's fall travel period, which it labels Sept. 20 to Dec. 26. The current cancellation table ends on the same date.
How Reservations Work When a Sailing Is Canceled
WSF recommends reservations for every vehicle on this route. It holds 20% of vehicle space for standby, and same-day travelers can ask to ride standby on an earlier or later sailing. WSF asks reservation holders on this route to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure. To avoid a no-show fee, changes or cancellations have to be made by 5 p.m. the day before. After that cutoff you get one final change, and no changes or cancellations are allowed within two hours of sailing. The WSF reservations page explains the details.
On a night when two of the three evening boats are canceled, the remaining sailing has to carry the drivers who would have spread across all three. The 20% standby share is the space available to anyone who misses their planned boat or decides to travel the same day. The tide cancellations are planned well ahead, so you can book around them. Staffing problems like the one on Oct. 5 come with no warning. That day, WSF waived no-show fees for affected reservations.
The list of canceled sailings can change, and WSDOT keeps the current version on its Port Townsend–Coupeville schedule adjustments page. Check it before booking any trip that depends on a 6:00, 7:30 or 9:10 p.m. departure from Coupeville.
