5 Must-Do Experiences at Deception Pass State Park

Table of contents:

Nestled on Puget Sound, Deception Pass State Park is one of Washington’s most visited parks for a reason. Mysterious coves, rugged cliffs, jaw-dropping sunsets, and a stomach-dropping high bridge make this park a go-to for locals and international travelers alike. We’ve put together a list of our top five favorite experiences at Deception Pass State Park.

History of Deception Pass State Park

Captain Salvador Fidalgo of Spain and Captain George Vancouver of England both explored the area around 1792. Captain Fidalgo named many local places using Spanish words including Rosario Beach and Fidalgo Island.

Captain Vancouver believed the pass was the mouth of the river until his lieutenant discovered that the adjacent land was actually an island. Vancouver named the waterway Deception Pass because of his mistaken belief that the pass was the mouth of the river, and he named the island after his lieutenant, Joseph Whidbey.

In 1866, the United States government set aside the land around the pass as a military reservation. A Congressional Act created Deception Pass State Park in 1922. Then during the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built roads, trails, buildings and log railings to encourage visitors.
